EU Regulation on packaging and packaging waste published

On 22 January 2025, the EU published Regulation (EU) 2025/40 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 December on packaging and packaging waste, amending Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and Directive (EU) 2019/904 and repealing Directive 94/62/EC (the "Packaging Regulation") in the Official Journal of the European Union ("OJEU"), establishing new rules covering the entire life cycle of packaging to enable its placing on the market.
The Packaging Regulation aims to harmonise national measures of the EU Member States and improve the functioning of the internal market. For this reason, a directly applicable regulation of a general nature has been established.
The Packaging Regulation entered into force on 11 February 2025 and will apply from 12 August 2026.
