OECD - An integrated approach to green infrastructure in Italy
18-07-2023
The report for "An integrated approach to green infrastructure in Italy" has been published by the OECD, which suggests the development of an infrastructure governance system capable of managing the environmental challenges of today, while strengthening resilience to climate change, as a fundamental requirement to guarantee Italy a sustainable and resilient future.
Green infrastructure (VI) and nature-based solutions (SBN) can help the country achieve this.
In this report, VI is considered a useful planning tool to ensure that the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem services and ecological networks are considered, from the outset, in territorial and infrastructural development.
The term "SBN" refers to specific solutions at the design level and involves the use of natural materials and mechanisms that imitate nature and its processes within infrastructure projects (for example, the construction of green walls or roofs in buildings, or the use of permeable rather than impervious paving to improve water absorption and retention and mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall).
